Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I complete my DSP?

  • Budget a minimum of 30 minutes when you can sit online at a computer and concentrate.
  • Have your high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores handy. You’ll be asked for them along the way.
  • Log on to the Directed Self-Placement site when you are ready to complete the process. (However, please continue to review Step 2 and Step 3 before logging on to the DSP site since the information given here will be useful before you move on to the site. You will be provided with the link once you have reviewed all of this information.)

Q: Do I have to complete my course selection choices all at once during the Directed Self-Placement process?

No, you can stop the process and log back in later. All of your decisions will be saved.


Q: What can I do if I have questions about my DSP choices?

You will be given specific instructions and explanations about your choices and the recommendations on the site. Please read them carefully. You will also have the opportunity to e-mail advisors in English and mathematics with your questions. They will answer you within 24 hours Monday through Friday.

Directed Self-Placement


Q: What should I do if I have trouble logging on to the DSP site?

Call our Information Technology office at (703) 526-6990 or the School of Arts and Sciences at (703) 284-1560 if you experience any technical problems. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Q: Since there are many sections of DSC 101, which one should I choose?

Each section presents a unique topic that students explore through active and inquiry-based learning. Please follow the link provided here for a description of the exciting topics offered this fall for DSC 101. Print out the page that describes all the sections so that you will have it handy when you are ready to register for DSC 101 along with your other classes. Choose the topic that appeals to you the most.


Q: Are there any deadlines for completing DSP, creating my schedule, and registering?

Yes, there are deadlines for different stages of the process.

  • You must complete your DSP choices before you attend your SOS in June.
  • You can pick your courses and plan your schedule as soon as you complete your DSP, but you cannot register for your classes online until June 1. Online registration will open for freshmen on June 1 and continue until June 18. Remember, you won’t be able to register until you have done your DSP.
  • If you complete your DSP on or after June 1, you will have a 24-hour hold before you can register. You will still be able to register but you will have to wait 24 hours after completing DSP before you can access Marynet (our online registration site). Do your DSP early (before June 1) and you won’t have a 24-hour hold!

Q: What happens if I don’t complete DSP or register by June 18?

We hope that won’t happen, but if it does, you should still complete your DSP before your orientation session. Based on your DSP choices, we will prepare a schedule and register you for your fall classes following the typical first semester courses for your major. You will be given this schedule when you come to your June SOS.


Q: What if I want to change my major or my schedule after I have registered?

  • You will be asked to verify your major when you begin your DSP. If the major listed is not the one you want, you can change it on the DSP site. (Students accepted into the University Studies program must remain “undeclared.”)
  • When you come to campus for your SOS, you will be asked again to verify your major, so if an error has occurred, you can correct it at check-in.
  • If you want to change your schedule after you have registered, you can always e-mail an advisor, and an advisor can assist you. You will be given the appropriate e-mail link on the DSP site. You can also change your schedule with your advisor when you come to your SOS.

Q: What should I do if I can’t attend the SOS I signed up for?

You need to contact orientation@marymount.edu or (703) 284-5706 immediately. Otherwise the schedule you have created will be deleted from the system.


Q: Does it matter which orientation session I attend?

No, it does not matter. Your schedule will be saved for you as long as you attend an orientation session.
